Postgraduate Dental Course

This two day course will provide the opportunity to the general dental practitioners of further knowledge and hands on experience in Computer aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM) technology . Computer aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM) technology is changing how we do crown, bridge and implant prosthodontics. We invite you to deepen your knowledge in this rapidly expanding field of dental technology and to learn more about how to use digital to elevate your routine crown, bridge and implant prosthodontics.

Aims & Objectives & Learning Outcomes

  • Learn and implement proper techniques for tooth preparation and the CAD design process of single restorations.
  • Understand the benefits and limitations of CAD/CAM in clinical practice.
  • Learn the technical skills required to use CAD/CAM technology.
  • Hands-on design and mill state-of-the-art digital restorations from your own preps.


Day 1 (Lectures and Hands on): 

  • Overview of dental chair-side CAD/CAM systems. Indications and limitations.
  • Preparation rules: inlay/onlay, veneer, crown.
  • Materials used in CAD/CAM.
  • Ceramic materials – How to choose them?
  • Principles of adhesion to ceramics and tooth surfaces.
  • Cementing: overview of cements. Cementing restorations.
  • Clinical cases: failure and success.
  • Longevity and maintenance of restorations.
  • Clinical preparation of both a single unit and a multiple unit restoration for an all ceramic restorations.

Day 2 (Lectures and hands-on): 

  • CAD/CAM dentistry – Chairside system overview and basic scanning techniques.
  • Case 1 – Crown with buccal bite scan.
  • Introduction to the milling system and maintenance steps.
  • Case 2 – Multiple inlay and onlay.
  • Stain and glaze – milling materials and finishing of the restoration.
  • Pre-op scan.
  • Questions and answers.

Each course day will run from 9:30am to 5:00pm

The price of the course includes comprehensive course notes, a certificate of completion from LonDEC/Kings College London, 12 hours verifiable CPD, lunch and refreshments throughout the day.

Rupert is a Clinical Lecturer and Specialist in Prosthodontics at King’s College London Dental Institute and has worked as a Specialist Prosthodontist at many leading practices focusing on aesthetic restoration and replacement of natural teeth using state-of-the-art technologies for the design and manufacture of dental restorations, including aesthetic veneers, crowns, bridges and implants for oral rehabilitation.

Rupert graduated Dentistry with Honours from the University of Manchester (2006), Dental Foundation Training with a Membership at the Royal College of Surgeons of England (2008), a PhD in Enamel Erosion (2011) and Speciality Registrar Training in Prosthodontics with a Masters in Clinical Dentistry with Distinction and Membership in Prosthodontics at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (2015).

Rupert holds Fellowships with the Higher Education Academy and the Academy of Medical Educators and is President of the Odontology Section of the Royal Society of Medicine (2016-17). Rupert is clinical lead for the Advanced Technology Centre at Guy’s Hospital and the Undergraduate Care Planning Clinics at King’s College London Dental Institute. Rupert’s educational leadership includes contributions to curriculum design, student assessment and feedback, and mentoring and pastoral care.

Dr. Sachin Varma is a Consultant in Prosthodontics at Guys and St Thomas’ Hospital Trust. He has been a Specialist in Prosthodontics since 2007.

Sachin still plays an active role there in training both postgraduate and undergraduate dentists. Sachin is currently head of year 1 for the specialist postgraduate training programme in Prosthodontics, based at Guys Hospital. He has a vast knowledge and experience in implant dentistry and takes great pleasure in sharing his skills. Sachin offers a mentoring service to referring dentists.

His clinical work has been reviewed and assessed by world leaders in restorative dentistry at Guys hospital. He also gained top marks in his master’s thesis, his work has since been publicised internationally.

Sachin takes pride in providing specialist treatment in Prosthodontics including implants, crowns, bridges and dentures at Surrey Dental Specialists. He pays particular attention to the cosmetic, yet functional and realistic aspects of dentistry.
