Course overview

INTRODUCTION

3 Day Modern Endodontics Dentistry Course – a must for any general practitioner wishing to improve their endodontic practice.
“This course was everything I expected and more! It covered all the essentials of Endodontics as well as more advanced topics. There was a great balance of theoretical content and hands-on components. The atmosphere is very friendly and relaxed, and the tutors were fantastic! I now feel much more confident and really enjoyed the course. I would absolutely recommend it”. – Nicolas Montagnat, BDS.

  • Day 1 - AM

BASIC PRINCIPLES AND ACCESS CAVITY PREPARATION

This session is a mixture of theory and hands-on training.
    The content will include:

    • Overview of assessing teeth for root canal treatment including decision making regarding clinical tooth structure assessment and the difficulty of root canal treatment by evaluating x-rays.
    • How to design access cavities for each case, based on the pre-operative x-ray/s and using knowledge of the anatomy of the tooth.
    • Understanding the importance of magnification to recognise the specific colour, texture and ‘map’ of the dentine to locate the root canals within a tooth.
    • Hands-on training on the use of an operating microscope and dedicated endodontic ultrasonic tips to achieve optimal access cavities in extracted teeth (simulation).
    • Delegates will have access to extracted teeth and radiographic imaging to facilitate the above exercises.
  • Day 1 - PM

    ROOT CANAL NEGOTIATION AND PREPARATION

This session is a mixture of theory and hands-on training.
    The content will include:

    • Following the teaching on the location of the root canals in the AM session, the learners will be taught how to initially ‘scout’ the canals.
    • Once the canals have been ‘scouted’, we will demonstrate how a reproducible ‘glide’ path can be produced using specific instruments (glide path files) which can create an unimpeded path for the rotary/reciprocating instruments to clean and shape the canals.
    • Learners will be taught how to ‘irrigate’ the canals optimally using ‘activated’ irrigation techniques to disinfect the shaped the canals to eliminate infection as best possible.
    • The learners will be taught how to use two different preparation systems (one ‘rotary’ and one ‘reciprocating’) and we will discuss the key features of both.
    • There will be demonstrations of the above techniques together with supervised hands-on teaching.
  • Day 2 - AM

    ROOT CANAL OBTURATION (FILLING)

This session is a mixture of theory and hands-on training.
    The content will include:

    • The rationale for obturating root canals to prevent nutrition to persistent bacteria and prevent reinfection.
    • To emphasise the importance of ‘cone’ fit when filling root canals with any technique.
    • Clinical demonstration and hands-on exercises to practice cone fit.
    • To discuss the rationale for the use of ‘bioceramic’ sealers and materials for filling root canals.
    • There will be a demonstration on the use of bioceramic sealers and learners will practice this technique to fill root canals.
    • We will discuss cases where root canals cannot be filled conventionally and the different techniques available for these cases. Relevant demonstrations will be provided.
  • Day 2 - PM

    ROOT CANAL RETREATMENT

This session is a mixture of theory and hands-on training.
    The content will include:

    • To discuss the prognosis of root canal retreatment and which factors will affect this.
    • We will discuss how each case should be assessed from the crown to the root to determine the possible challenges for each specific case.
    • There will be a discussion on how to remove crowns, posts and cores (filling materials) prior to root canal retreatment.
    • We will discuss, demonstrate and practice the removal of root filling materials using a variety of techniques.
    • Alternative protocols for removing root filling materials will be demonstrated.
    • Strategies for challenging cases will also be discussed.
  • Day 3 - AM

    CONSOLIDATION SESSION

This session is a hands-on clinical session allowing consolidation of the clinical techniques covered in Days 1 and 2.
    This will include:

    • Refining endodontic access cavities (these are the cavities prepared to find the root canals) so that they can be prepared, cleaned and filled.
    • The location, negotiation and preparation of the root canals so that the infection can be reliably removed using root canal disinfection protocols.
    • Filling the root canals to prevent reinfection of the tooth.
    • Practicing the techniques involved in removing root filling materials when carrying out root canal retreatment when this is required.
    • Discussing and managing complications during the above procedures
  • Day 3 - PM

    CASE DISCUSSION SESSION

This is an interactive case discussion session which will cover the diagnosis, management and prognosis of various endodontics problems which are encountered in clinical practice.
There will be a variety of cases presented with clinical images, videos and radiographs which will help the learner in clinical practice. This will include:

    • The diagnosis and management of tooth/root resorption (which can be internal or external).
    • Management of pain before, during and after root canal treatment.
    • The repair of perforations when these are accidentally made in a tooth.
    • The restoration of root filled teeth to provide the best survival for teeth that have undergone root canal treatment.
    • How to recognise, assess and treat unusual root canal anatomy.
    • How to use 3D imaging for endodontics diagnosis and treatment planning.
