  Clinical Skills in Indirect Restorations – Preparation Techniques and Material Selection
  Introduction
  This hands-on module takes place in the phantom head skills laboratory and is designed to reintroduce returning dental professionals to the principles and techniques of preparing teeth for indirect restorations. With an emphasis on precision, material-specific preparation, and contemporary laboratory materials, the module supports the development of clinical competence in delivering high-quality restorative care. Participants will engage with current advancements in dental materials and learn to tailor tooth preparation to suit various types of indirect restorations, including crowns and onlays.

  Learning Objectives
  By the end of this module, participants will be able to:

  • 1. Demonstrate correct tooth preparation techniques for a range of indirect restorations, including full coverage and partial coverage options.
    2. Identify the clinical indications and contraindications for different types of indirect restorations.
    3. Describe the properties and requirements of contemporary dental materials such as lithium disilicate, zirconia, and hybrid ceramics.
    4. Perform tooth reductions that are material-specific and in line with evidence-based guidelines for optimal restoration longevity and aesthetics.
    5. Recognise common preparation errors and understand how to avoid compromising restoration fit and function.
    6. Evaluate the laboratory communication process and understand the clinical relevance of accurate impressions, bite registrations, and preparation design.

  Temporisation and Luting – Techniques for Indirect Restorations
  Introduction
  Building directly upon the practical skills developed in Module 4, this module focuses on the critical clinical steps that follow tooth preparation: temporisation and definitive cementation. Provisional restorations play a vital role in protecting the prepared tooth, maintaining function, and assessing aesthetics. This module provides a detailed exploration of techniques for fabricating provisional restorations and selecting appropriate luting agents or adhesive systems, tailored to the type of indirect restoration and material used.

  • To provide a thorough understanding of the principles and protocols for cementation and adhesion of indirect restorations
  • To enable appropriate selection and application of luting agents based on clinical scenario and restorative material.

  • 1. Fabricate provisional restorations that provide appropriate protection, fit, and aesthetics.
    2. Understand the biological and mechanical roles of provisional restorations in indirect restorative workflows.
    3. Compare and contrast temporary cements and their indications for various clinical situations.
    4. Identify and describe the different classes of definitive luting agents, including resin-based cements, conventional cements, and self-adhesive systems.
    5. Select the most appropriate cementation protocol for a given restoration and material, considering factors such as retention, aesthetics, and isolation.
    6. Demonstrate effective techniques for isolation, cementation, excess removal, and final finishing to ensure long-term success of indirect restorations.

  Contemporary Direct Restorative Techniques – Composite and Amalgam
  Introduction
  This final module emphasises the practical application of direct restorative materials, with a primary focus on composite resin and a supplementary review of amalgam use. Given the evolving shift toward adhesive, minimally invasive dentistry, this session reinforces essential clinical techniques in placing functional, aesthetic, and long-lasting composite restorations. Additionally, it addresses situations where amalgam may still be appropriate in clinical practice, ensuring returning dental professionals are confident in delivering care using a full spectrum of direct restorative materials.
